streets of penang

Had a short getaway to Penang this week (7-10 December) and had a lot of fun exploring the streets of Penang and trying out good (and cheap) food.
We stayed at 23 Lovelane (a boutique hotel with 10 rooms) and it was very very spacious and cozy (biggest toilets and showering areas HAHAHA)

When we reached Penang (a short 1+ hour flight from Singapore) it was lunchtime so we set out to find cheap good food along Penang's streets.
Teksen Restaurant
18 Lebuh Carnarvon, Georgetown

After having lunch, we visited Khoo Kongsi temple (one of the many clan houses found around Penang - this temple is the grandest amongst them)

Family timer photo!!! HAHA

Visited China House café afterwards - ps the price of food here is no different from that of the food found in Singapore cafés HAHA but the food is good nonetheless!
Lemon Cheesecake + Pineapple Juice

The setting there was very nice !!! (good for photo-taking hurhur)

China House
153 Lebuh Pantai, Georgetown

Walked down to Chew and Tan jetties after resting at China House
View of Penang Bridge from Chew Jetty
(currently the longest bridge in the world at 24km)

On the way to a Peranakan restaurant (that was closed on Mondays LOL so we went back afterwards)
Sunset in the streets of Georgetown

Decided to have dinner at Gurney Drive Hawker Centre
Our hopes were quite high because many people said this hawker centre was a must-visit but the food wasn't as good as expected (we ordered claypot rice, wanton mee, asam laksa and fried kway teow but only the wanton mee was good HAHA)
Gurney Drive Hawker Centre
172 Solok Gurney 1, Georgetown

Our first stop the next day was the Peranakan mansion/museum - they give guided tours around the mansion and you should go for it instead of wandering around by yourself because you get to learn some pretty cool stuff about the place !! + there's a family temple connected to the Peranakan mansion
Didn't take a lot of photos because listening to the museum tour guide HAHA but this place is very worth it and you should definitely give it a visit when you come to Penang !!

We then had lunch at the Peranakan restaurant we intended to have dinner at previously
(the food was super nice!)
Aunty Gaik Lean's
1 Lebuh Bishop, Georgetown

After having lunch we went around Georgetown to find the famous Ernest Zacharevic murals !!!
Little Children on a Bicycle

Reaching Up

Little Girl in Blue
(This mural is found very near the Camera Museum so if you're planning to visit you should visit both at once)

Boy on a Motorcycle

Little Boy Walking Dinosaur
(I found the piece to be very creative as it mixes the realistic painting of a boy with the childlike imagination of a dinosaur but it's quite a pity the mural has faded due to weathering)

You can check out the map for the Ernest Zacharevic Murals Walking Trail here! (note that the mural found at Chew Jetty is gone due to weathering)

(not part of the Ernest Zacharevic mural series but part of the 101 Lost Kittens project which creates awareness on the need to protect stray animals)
The Cat and Bruce Lee
(This mural is found on the wall in the back alley just behind the boy and the dinosaur + the boy on the motorcycle)

Louis Gan murals - quite similar to the Ernest Zacharevic murals
(can be found at the back alleys of Chulia Street Ghaut!)
Brother and Sister on a Swing

Children Playing Basketball

(not very sure who the artist for this is but)
Brother and Sister
(found on Lebuh Armenian and a block away from Chew Jetty)

Boatman - by Julia Volchkova
(actually visited it the next morning but shall include it here! it was located right behind our hotel)

After finishing our hunt for street art we visited Kek Lok Si Temple (which is located up a hill) and is the largest Buddhist Temple in Malaysia -
The view from the temple

With the 30 metre tall statue of Guan Yin

This temple does look grand and all but it is not very worth visiting in my opinion!
Maybe it'll be better during the 30-day light-up during the lunar new year.

Our next stop was Penang Hill!
This location is a must if you're in Penang as the temperature is nice and the views are very bagus HAHAHA
Literally walking among clouds! It was super misty up there but loved the temperature man

Night view from Penang Hill!

After coming down from Penang Hill we had dinner at a coffee shop near Ayer Itam
Food was really good + cheap !! (love the fried kway teow hurhur)
Zhong Nan Hawker Centre
Beside Ayer Itam Shell Petrol Station
(didn't have the exact location toot)

Spent our morning at the Camera Museum -
It may be a little small but it is worth a visit as you get to see super old cameras, some of which are 100+ years old and over 90% of the cameras in the museum are functional wewz

After our short visit to the camera museum we walked down to have lunch at a chinese restaurant
Peking Duck
(RM60 aka $20 which is less than half the price of Peking Duck in Singapore lul)

Foong Wei Restaurant
3 Jalan Sri BahariGeorgetown

Visited Macalister Mansion next and took a cab because it was so far LOL

Had high tea at the mansion
High tea there was very good and affordable compared to prices in Singapore so yep you should visit !!

Our last night in Penang was spent hunting for good street food - Lebuh Chulia comes alive at night with food stalls set up along the streets - one should not miss out on the street food here! (this was very close to our hotel as the stalls were set up just opposite the place where Lovelane and Lebuh Chulia intersect)
The famous wanton mee woohoo

Hor Fun at Lebuh Cintra!
I don't think it's really famous but it is very good and makes you feel like you're in hor fun heaven HAHAHA

Nasi Kandar
(which was good and full of spices !!!)
Hameediyah Restaurant
164 Lebuh Campbell, Georgetown

On our way back we spotted this little art shop/bicycle rental shop and decided to stop by - turns out it was an artist selling watercolour postcards and other souvenirs (painted by his dad wew) depicting the scenes in the streets of Penang (wish my art was like this manz)

Our last day in Penang was spent wandering the streets (while looking for the famous chendol HAHA)
The skies were exceptionally blue and clear on our last day there
(which isn't necessarily a good thing because my face burned lel)

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol
Lebuh Keng Wee

Had Char Siew Rice for our last lunch there - it was good but not really worth the long wait
Wai Kee Char Siew
348 Lebuh Chulia, Georgetown

That concludes our trip to Penang! Penang is worth a visit if you are looking for a short getaway and especially if you are one who loves asian food (+ it's really cheap compared to prices in Singapore)
Getting around Georgetown can be done by foot and a map - walking allows you to see more things that might be missed easily so yep try walking instead of getting a taxi :-)
